I really did not believe that I have the social capability of talking one-on-one to 30 women in a span of less than 3 hours. But yes, I did it, killed it…can’t believe I managed to network with 30 women so productively. And ‘to the point’ it was..’Here’s what I can do for you and here’s what you can do for me’ Well, thanks to ‘SNS’ –the Speed Networking Sutra’ conceptualized by Ritu, a “Guru” in networking!!
SNS is a structured and fast paced networking event allowing women entrepreneurs to interact with others, typically in a series of brief one-on-one information exchanges. Speed networking takes its cue from speed dating, an event where individuals are allowed a short amount of time to meet a number of prospective dates, one at a time. Speed networking is the business version of speed dating.
The big issue about networking with people is that you are always apprehensive, whether you are being too intrusive, is the other person interested in networking etc etc. When you participate in SNS, you know that everyone is there for the same purpose, which is getting to know people and developing business which makes you feel a lot more confident, especially if your are the introvert types.
The format followed for Speed Networking Sutra is called a round robin. The SNS event leader will usually ring a bell to indicate the beginning and end of each round. Once the round begins, you introduce yourself and your purpose for being there, share your business card and perhaps, business brochure. A few questions and answers back and forth can quickly clarify if there is any potential for a follow up phone call or meeting. At the halfway point, the conversation switches to the second person, who introduces themselves and their reason for attending. After a second exchange of information, the event leader rings a bell and you move on to the next person.
The key to making speed networking work, is to take those contacts and develop them over time into “credible” relationships that lead to “profitable” referral partners. Developing a strong referral base is about developing relationships with a variety of people, even when it seems you have nothing in common… You’re there to find ways to connect with each and every women entrepreneur you have the opportunity to sit in front of for that 3 minutes period. The magic happens after the exercise, in the weeks and months to come. Set appointments with each person, not to convince them they need your product/service, but with the intention of becoming better acquainted, finding out what their needs are and how you can positively impact their lives or business.
