For a lot of us moms, we need to move away from our pre-mommy day careers, for obvious reasons: long working hours, no-one to baby sit or simply that we just realize that we want to give our kids our very best, and going back to what we did as a full-time job or profession just does not make sense. And then comes, what I describe as, the most restless phase, where you start feeling… ‘But I don’t know anything else’ ‘I need to do something for a few hours, but I have no idea what!’ And then you have the dilemma when you see financial pressures increasing and you want to contribute.
Recently, I met Bindu, someone who makes our stories seem so worthless! Bindu is a high-spirited 40 year old mom of 2 lovely grown-up kids, from a orthodox Gujarati family in Borivalli, Mumbai, who had been confined to her 4 walls in the house and had never stepped out to work, or even thought of a career.
In 2005, when she was just 30, her husband was diagnosed with cancer and Bindu suddenly realized that the financial responsibility was now going to be hers. With some help from friends, she started teaching Abacus to kids and made her first few bucks, but she knew that it was not going to be enough….Within 6 months of being diagnosed, her husband passed away, leaving her with absolutely nothing. In her words “I did not even have one gold ring as savings. The only thing I could see were my children and I had to make them proud. The i-Math programme was my turning point. When I came across the i-Math programme by Chrysaalis IMath India, I knew it was going to work. I had surveyed several kids’ educational programs and this one seemed like the star; besides the franchise fees were also reasonable.” Being a graduate of science, she had a soft corner for Math, but also knew how most parents (leave alone the kids) feared the subject. With the program structured towards teaching concepts in the most fun way, she knew she had a strong selling point.
The first i-Math franchise that she took up in Vile-Parle was not a roaring success, as marketing and running the franchise was tough given the distance from her home. But she was convinced about the program, and took up her second franchise close to home at Borivalli. She took space in a pre-school on a rental basis and gave in her best into marketing, leaving no stone unturned. She would be personally present giving out flyers during the open-house of every pre-school in the area and explaining parents about the program. Her conviction in the program helped her towards her initial success. Word of mouth and parent testimonials were the next kickers.
She started with a handful of students who she would teach herself, and now runs 16 batches with over 100 students and a host of teachers working under her.
At no-point in time did she work for more than 4 hours s day, not wanting to compromise on her children’s upbringing. “Given the success of this venture and the strong support from Dristi-Learning (the education company which is the master franchise of Chrysaalis IMaths India), I took up another franchise of the Dino-Art programme started by them. That too, has been a great success” she says.
When, Bindu, a simple graduate of science, who had never worked outside her home, can reach such heights of success where she has been able to educate her kids beautifully, (her daughter is currently pursuing her LLB and son is in school), has been able to buy her own home and is now looking to buy a space of her own to conduct her classes, this surely serves as an inspiration to all moms. Our children can be the wind in the sails of our careers and the secret behind our success.
