When you bring a child into this world, the child brings to you a world entirely different from the one you were living in. You begin to look at breastfeeding, potty management, sleep patterns in a completely new light.
Before my baby was born, I had never given diapering much thought. I assumed that the normal disposable diapers were great enough; after all so many parents were using them quite happily, right?
I decided to try my first disposable diaper when my boy was 15 days old because he would wake up within half an hour of his after-bath sleep due to a pee-wet langot.
My doctor advised me to use a diaper rash cream, very liberally, before putting on the diaper on him, and so I did. He was fine the first few times but then the rashes began to appear, despite the cream. I struggled between avoiding diapers and minimising the inconvenience of not using them. The fact that each diaper cost around 10 rupees and that it got added to the landfill for 500 years made me feel quite guilty.
One day, I finally decided to read up on diapering to see if there were other mothers facing such a dilemma. What I read was scary; disposable diapers contain many toxic chemicals that we have no clue about. Besides, the plasticky nature of the diapers also contribute to the rashes. And I was so right about them not being right for my baby.
On further research I came across the Advanced Cloth Diapers and I was quite intrigued by what they had to offer. They claimed to provide all the benefits of disposable diapers in cloth! Seemed quite impossible, almost like an obvious over-claim.
How could cloth stay dry? I could imagine long-hours absorbency and leak-proofing, but dry-feel? All the terms and confusing overload of information around these cloth diapers did not help either. I took a good month to research and order my first diaper with a friend from US.
I eagerly tried my first diaper, desperately praying that they indeed do provide all the benefits they claimed to provide so that I never need to go back to disposable diapers again.
I was amazed to see that they indeed did! The special fabric stayed dry even if my baby peed on it, the outer was completely leak-proof, and it absorbed for a good 5-6 hours! I fell in love with them instantly and cried my tears of joy. I had finally found the ultimate diapering solution for my baby.
Soon the love turned into obsession as I realized that my baby’s rashes were now non-existent (and I was not using any rash cream), the diapers were super economical – I needed around 10-12 of them to diaper my baby till he got potty trained, and they looked gorgeous on my baby’s bum.
Yes, the washing was an extra effort, but it did not matter much since we used a washing machine to wash them and it was pretty simple. A small price to pay for the convenience and benefits both my baby and me were getting.
While earlier I would try to avoid diapers and use them only when absolutely necessary, now I was using them even at home without a second thought.
My husband and I were so enthused by these advanced cloth diapers that we could not stop raving about them. We realized that in India, these diapers were known to a very small niche segment of parents. Also, the quality of diapers available in India was very basic and inconsistent.
Add to it the information overload, which many a times discouraged parents from trying this awesome option out. With the lack of proper guidance towards using the diapers, some mothers even end up using them wrongly and decide that cloth diapering is not for them.
We decided to launch Superbottoms, a baby-friendly diaper solutions company. We don’t just sell diapers, but we also provide parents with complete and simplified guidance and support right from the day they think of cloth diapering till their child is potty trained.
With Indian climate being perfectly suited for cloth diapers, we do hope that more and more parents in India adopt this pro-baby diapering option for their babies, saving a lot of money and also saving our planet earth!
