I was rather excited for our weekend break to Pune, where we were to meet some of our cousins. My elder daughter was 11 months then, and obviously, I had a ton to tick on my packing list. While I was in the midst of all the packing, she signaled to to me ‘Potty’.( Being potty trained early, she could convey that to me) and as I put her on the potty seat, I noticed her passing loose watery stools. This was the first time, my baby had diarrhea and I was rather concerned. Especially, after this repeated 3 more times that evening. She also looked uncomfortable and was suddenly cranky which led me to believe that she was probably having a stomach ache as well.
I could not tell what was causing this discomfort and diarrhea but realized that she was a bit fussy about eating since a while. That entire day, she had refused most foods and maybe this was the reason.
When we were younger, stomach troubles and loose motions were normally treated with a host of medicines and a light diet and I was pretty much expecting the same line of treatment for my little one.
Infact, I was hoping to get a quick fix, cause I really did not want my trip to get cancelled. Immediately, I called my pediatrician to apprise her of the situation and understand the line of treatment. Also I was worried about dehydration etc which could be an offshoot to these issues.
My pediatrician, as usual, being a very patient and understanding person, explained me the possible causes of the stomach bug which included indigestion, some food not reacting well or an infection. But recommended a simple line of treatment and assured me that it was no big deal. What she really was looking at doing was restoring the gut flora by introducing good bacteria to her. She was certain that by infusing probiotics, the overall health will be restored. She did not want to medicate my lo at all and explained that most stomach issues get sorted by the good bacteria that we infuse and that the reason for a child being fussy about food or irritable at mealtimes is normally on account of the stomach not being well. Enterogermina is the No 1 recommended probiotic by pediatricians and helps in restoring gut flora. She was also very firm about not giving Tania any food by force or till she asked for it.
Interestingly, she did not recommend cancelling my trip at all and was confident of the probiotic treatment. And to my surprise, my little one did get relief by the next morning. Although it took a 3 more days for her to start eating normally, enterogermina gave quick relief to the diarrhea.
Infact, post this first stomach bug incident, I no longer panicked at stomach issues and understood the science of restoring gut flora. In fact, whenever, I go through phases of poor stomach health of my children, I resort to this treatment and notice results in 5-7 days. So now you understand how important a part of your body is the ‘Gut’…that’s why you probably say-‘My Gut Feel’
