Most of us moms reach this stage and Mitali is one such mom who made the most of it!! Having been a career women pre-motherhood with an engineering and MBA degree, when Mitali’s kids were in full day school, she knew it was time she did something for her interest; she wanted to deploy her time into something lucrative.
After having taught her kids phonics, way before it was such a hot concept in India, she started with a phonics class and was an instant hit. But something prompted her to continue her search for something closer to her field of expertise.
That’s when she came across the i-Maths program which absolutely thrilled her. Mitali was enamored by the concept. The basic funda of teaching kids mathematical concepts through activities is what fascinated her. She instantly knew that several kids would benefit from this program in many ways since it is an international concept of teaching Maths that is very different from the method that is adopted in most schools here.
i-Maths basically focuses on the development of the right and left brain by teaching Maths through activities and specialized apparatus. It is an application-oriented program where all the concepts are simplified and taught in a unique way, which results in thorough learning and retention of the concept. It also aims at improving the child’s observation and thinking ability. The equipment that is used is colourful and attractive to keep the child engaged. This results in activation of both sides of the brain, which results in improving the child’s grasping as well as retention, which helps in their overall development.
Mitali, took up the i-Maths franchise at Andheri West in Mumbai with a lot of enthusiasm, knowing that it would appeal to her crowd of people. She started with 2 kids in her class and within a period of 3 years has a student strength of 100 kids. Her belief in the program motivated her to put in her best into everything. Besides using the company’s equipment, which she swears by, she kept using innovative method and fun props to make her classes interesting. For example, ‘Coordinates and Graphs’ are taught in her class using fictional cartoons and characters that all stay together in an apartment complex!!
Basic concepts like ‘addition’ is taught using colourful abacus stands which the company provides and ensures that each child has their own. The number of children are limited to 10 per class to ensure quality and attention. A lot of attention is paid to generalized concepts like ‘Basic Networks’. They device games to explain these concepts which results in a permanent imprint on the child’s brain.
The Social Media Advantage
Mitali realized that the best way to reach out to her crowd and give them confidence is through social media. She made the most of it by developing a very lively and colourful FB page where she keeps the parent involved by putting up pictures of all her classes so that the parents know what is being taught in class and can revise the concepts with their children. She also puts up videos of the concepts taught to keep parents on the same page.
The effective use of FB and whatsapp has been her key to success since she knew her audience would appreciate it. The colourful equipment used in class also is a great help in making the page exciting and engaging. She left no stone unturned to reach out!!
