As it rains continuously, we snuggle up with our hot tea and favorite book and enjoy the downpour. However, this season also brings in unwanted guests – not to share your tea and snacks but to spread all kinds of diseases! Since we also know that chemical insect repellents aren’t great for our health or for the earth, here are 5 natural ways to keep bugs away from your home this season. You won’t ever go back to chemical bug sprays again!
5 Ways to keep Bugs Away from your Home this Monsoon
Know what bugs love the most? Dirty places! Yes, bugs love bits of food lying around, dirty dishes, uncovered dustbins and stagnant water. So keeping your home spic and span is your first line of defense in keeping bugs away this season. Make sure to wipe up spills and sweep up crumbs as soon as you spot them so you don’t give the critters even the slightest chance to find your home attractive!
Citronella works great to repel many kinds of bugs, especially mosquitoes. There are many ways you can use this magic ingredient, the most common ways being as essential oil in sprays or as candles. For your home, a candle might be an easier option. Just place in a safe spot and light up around evening, which is when the mosquitoes come charging in.
Make DIY Moth Bags
Nearly all of us remember suffering through the obnoxious smells of moth balls to keep pesky moths away. However, you don’t need to, when you can make your own natural moth bags. Mix together equal parts of dried lavender and rosemary (or mint) and put them in a little muslin sachet. Hang around your home and in wardrobes or storage boxes. Replace when the scent turns dull.
Use a Lemon Eucalyptus Oil Mixture
This one’s especially good for a common monsoon problem – mosquitoes!!! With so many scares regarding dengue, chikungunya and Zika, getting rid of mosquitoes has become an important health concern on a national level. Do your part by making your own mosquito spray with lemon eucalyptus oil, which works much better than DEET sprays. Mix 20-25 drops of the oil with about 60 ml coconut oil in a spray bottle. Shake well before using.
Make a Citrus Pomander
Pomanders look pretty and festive and are also great to repel flies & mosquitoes while making your home smell great! It’s very easy to make one yourself – just get a ripe orange or large lemon and stick cloves all over it. Tie a pretty ribbon around it and hang it wherever you like. You can also cut an orange in half and stick cloves into the cut part for a more intense smell.
Come to think of it, none of these ways to keep bugs away from your home are difficult or expensive. All you need is maybe one trip to the store and you can keep your home bug free for the whole season! Since these are natural methods, their effects aren’t as deadly as chemical sprays, so you may have to refresh them regularly. But that’s a small price to pay when you consider how much you gain in terms of health, money and eco-friendliness!
